National or International?

The National Wine Centre, located in Adelaide’s CBD does showcase national wines but I would say the standard of everything that they do is of “International” standard. Wine and food events are held regularly (just starting again after Covid), business conferences, weddings, art exhibitions etc. etc. The centre is also home to a variety of Wine Industry bodies.

I remember when the Wine Centre was first built in 2001 right next to the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, it caused quite a stir. The very modern and bold architecture was based on different elements found in wineries, predominantly the staves of barrels. I love the curved walkway under these staves and along the deep ochre pigmented rammed walls. The Centre has won many architectural awards for its use of natural light, metal and wood and it conveys a real sense of being in a winery or vineyard. For more info on the architecture the pdf below is interesting reading.

The fabulous use of rammed earth walls and industrial steel inside this open space brings to mind the feeling of space inside a winery.

The cellar can be viewed from above and is very impressive!
